Nexirift is coming to the Fediverse

In summary: We are moving to the Fediverse, a place that is decentralised and not owned by a single company or individual. We will have an 18+ moderation team and will be open about any changes to the platform. We are no longer registering a company and will not take donations for the time being.

As many of you may know, we announced the discontinuation of Nexirift in September of 2025. This was a very hard decision to make, but we felt it was the best choice due to multiple factors. However, this month (October of 2025), we decided that we should continue, but instead, move to the Fediverse.

Some background for those who do not know what the Fediverse is: it is a decentralised social network that is built on open protocols. It is not controlled by any single company, and it is not owned by any single person. This means it is resistant to censorship, and you are not stuck with a single platform.

My current stance is that it would be better if we do not register a company and instead focus on the community. That's why we have started to remove "corporate" sounding words from the project and we will be archiving some old projects and as you can see, removing unnecessary services like the blog and docs.

Currently, we do not plan to take any donations for this project since we believe it is not financially necessary at the moment. We may make donations open in the future; however, we do not want to take money from users if the platform cannot sustain itself from the userbase.

We would like to note that any previously promised or planned features are very unlikely to be implemented. This is due to the lack of funding (which we do not want to accept anyway). The good thing is that the source code is open source, so we could add those features later.

However, we can confirm that the following features will be implemented:

  • The ability to interact with users from:
    • The Fediverse: Both ways - No limitations!
    • Twitter: One way (Nexirift) - Twitter users will not see you.
    • Bluesky: Both ways - Opt-in on Bluesky's side.
    • Threads: Both ways - Opt-in on Threads' side.
  • Custom emojis: This is server-controlled, so we may allow verified artists to create them.
  • Reactions: Defaults to a heart, but you can choose anything, replaces likes.
  • Custom themes and sounds: Yes, completely customizable!
  • Move to another instance: You can move to any other instance at any time.
  • Posts can be scheduled: For those who want this feature.
  • Private accounts and posts: You can create private accounts and private posts.
  • Avatar decorations: Maybe? They likely won't be animated.
  • Verified artists: Possibly an increased file size limit and some other features.
  • Edit posts: You can edit posts completely for free.
  • Import posts: You can import your old posts from other instances and mainstream platforms.
  • Mastodon compatible: Fully compatible with the Mastodon API.
  • ... and a lot more to come.

Just a quick note, most of these features are not Nexirift specific and were likely implemented by the server software we plan to use. Here is the list of features from Sharkey!

For those concerned about moderation, all moderators are required to be 18+ due to the risk of adult content. Any existing staff who were planned to be on the moderation team who are still underage will now be removed. For those wondering, these people were on the team since they would be 18 by the original release date.

Becoming a moderator on Nexirift will not be an easy task since we want to ensure that all moderators uphold the utmost standards of decency and respect towards our community. Please note that moderation applications will not be open until we feel comfortable enough with the processes involved.

Our core values remain the same. We will:

  • Be open about any changes to the platform.
  • Remove hateful and abusive content.
  • Be transparent about any moderation decisions.
  • Focus on the community and not the company. (which no longer exists)
  • Be a place where everyone can feel safe and welcome.
  • Uphold user privacy and safety.

For those who were or still are sceptical about the platform, you can feel free to use any other Fediverse instance. A full list of instances is available at fediverse.party or fedidb.com/servers. To those who still believe in the platform, thank you for your continued support during the hard times.

Now on to the release date! We plan to release Nexirift sometime in late November or early December. Although this release date is subject to change, it will be no later than January 2026. The registration will likely require a reason, and you will have to wait for approval. We may allow approved users to invite a few people without approval every week or so.

Thank you for reading the article. We hope to see you on Nexirift or in the Fediverse!
